Author Visit - Patricia Newman

Author Patricia Newman visited Terry Elementary and Garfield Elementary Schools. At both schools she presented lessons based on her books. Her dynamic lessons engaged students with kinesthetic and other hands on activities.

Mrs. Newman presented her book Jingle the Brass to our youngest. Students learned about railroading lingo and how steam engines and railroads worked in the past. Students lined up to become different parts of a train on the tracks to show how on coming trains pass on the tracks. The two trains of students acted out how to avoid having a "cornfield meet."

Our third and fourth grade students learned about aircraft carriers through Mrs. Newman's book Nugget on the Flight Deck. Students learned about life on a flight deck. They had the opportunity to act out the different jobs on deck: purple shirts, blue shirts, green shirts, yellow shirts, red shirts, brown shirts, and white shirts, everyone has a job. This book "catapulted" students into the life and lingo on a carrier.

Fifth and sixth students were taught about our environmental impact on the ocean. Through her newest book Plastic Ahoy! Investigating the Great Pacific Garbage Patch Mrs. Newman taught the students about the effects plastic has on ocean environments. She took the students through an experiment that showed the impact humans have on oceans. Students had the opportunity to participate in the experiment by taking away from the ocean habitat or adding hazards to a simulated ocean environment.

The days Mrs. Newman spent in Selma were filled with learning opportunities for students, parents, and teachers. What a terrific literacy event!
Before Mrs. Newman presented we had the WOW or the Without Walls Library sign students and parents up for Fresno County Public Library cards. They were able to sign up and hand out 45 new library cards at this event. We want to give a big thank you to Mark Berner and Joanna Chase for coming to Terry school. Please visit the WOW! Mobil Library blog to see their write-up about the event.
Mrs. Newman spent the evening with parents, students, and teachers at Terry Elementary School. We had dinner with the author and she signed books for students. After dinner Patricia presented on what it is like being an author, the writing process, and answered parent questions. This was a terrific family literacy night where everyone learned something about reading and writing.

These first grade student from Mrs. Ayeni's class had a great time responding to the reading of Dr. Seuss' story Oh the Thinks You Can Think! Through the use of Legos they answered the question, "If Dr. Seuss used Legos to create his illustrations what would they look like?" Below you will see what they came up with through the video Mrs. Ayeni created. Please see the accompanying lesson plan.

We open the library early to provide Makerspace time for any students who wants to participate. Today we gave the students the opportunity to make snowflakes with Popsicle sticks and glitter. They had a fantastic time creating their sparkly snowflakes.
After many different reading of the Gingerbread Man, we provided these kindergarten students with a Makerspace opportunity. They each created their own Gingerbread Boy or Girl using a variety of sweets. This was a terrific end to a Gingerbread study.

The Day of the Reader event was put on through the collaborative efforts of Felicia Gonzalez, Terry School Library Technician and Jeromy Winter, Teacher Librarian and with the support of the great teaching staff at Terry Elementary School. We are also thankful for the support our head librarian, Maria Petropulos, gives us in putting together these types of activities for students. As part of the events we also made and served breakfast and lunch to our special guests and all of Terry Staff. These efforts of the library staff, teachers, and community members are to get children excited about reading, writing, and learning.

Kathy Goosev Howell, was able to get the students excited about reading, through singing and dancing with the students, reading her books to them, and even doing a bit of magic. She is a highly energetic presenter who tailored her presentation to each grade level. All students learned about writing through her motivating presentations. Kathy discussed the process of writing, editing, and publishing a books. She spoke about and showed examples of a book before it is bound. She generously gave each teacher either a CD or one of her books. She also had a drawing for each class where she gave away books and CDs to students. She did a fantastic job at getting the Terry Elementary School students excited about reading and writing.

Our guest readers also did a fantastic job at motivating the students. They not only read books, but spoke about the importance of reading and becoming educated. The guest readers went into classrooms to read a variety of books to the students. After reading, the student were able to ask the readers questions about their jobs. We really appreciate these readers for the valuable time they spent with students.

Some students who won books during the drawing came back the next day and said they read the entire chapter book. They couldn’t wait to tell us about the mystery behind the story Skoob. This excitement for reading shows us that the collective efforts of everyone involved was well worth while.

Special Guest Author:
Kathy Goosev Howell - Author of the books The Perfectly Purple Sneakers, Skoob, and Skoob Revisited and coauthor of the music CDs Rock Out with Spelling and Rock Out with Spelling Volume 2.

The students in Mrs. Ayeni's class participated in a science pumpkin lesson. Students weighed pumpkins, measured pumpkins, counted the ribs, counted seeds, looked at the stings under a microscope, drew and labeled pumpkins, and read books about pumpkins. They used celery and die in water to see the how roots take in water. This was a great morning of pumpkin related centers. The library staff, Mrs. Gonzalez and Mr. Winter collaborated with Mrs. Ayeni to teach students about pumpkins and how they grow.

At Terry Elementary the Kindergarten students learned to sequence a story. After reading The Old Lady Who Swallowed a Bat the students sequenced the story. They colored and cut out the characters from the story. After cutting and gluing the Old Lady to a bag they inserted the characters in the order the story happened. What a simple and fun way to retell a story.

Lessons In and Out of the Library

10/9/2014

Library staff not only provide lessons inside the four walls which contain the collection. You might find us in a classroom teaching researching skills. We might be in the library providing supplemental activities to complement what is learned in the classroom. Here we are providing researching lessons to 2nd grade students. The students are learning about bats. Through collaboration between the library technician, teacher, and teacher librarian we were able to help the students with researching and writing, as well as provided a fun hands on activity to accompany what they are learning. We touched on so many CCSS standards, but here are a few of the main standards taught:
  • W.2.2. Write informative/explanatory texts in which they introduce a topic, use facts and definitions to develop points, and provide a concluding statement or section.
  • W.2.4 With guidance and support from adults, produce writing in which the development and organization are appropriate to task and purpose. (Grade-specific expectations for writing types are defined in standards 1–3 above.) CA
  • W.2.10 Write routinely over extended time frames (time for research, reflection, and revision) and shorter time frames (a single sitting or a day or two) for a range of discipline-specific tasks, purposes, and audiences. CA
