  Selma Unified School Libraries Rock!

Parent Support of the Library Program at Selma Unified school District

Video Translation

Hi my name is Maria Calderon; I belong to Eric White. My daughter is in second grade in Miss Balakian’s class.

The night you held literacy night I learned that the kids are more interested in things related to books. When the Principal raffled books I saw the enthusiasm in the students. I saw that they wanted to win a bundle of books. I learned that it is interesting to attend these events because the students feel how interested we are attending these events.

That day I learned that we must attend these events for our children. I learned how important reading is for them and how we the parents must interact with them more. Due to our work sometimes, we get home and we tend to chores and other things that we do not give our children the time and attention that they need. These events is exactly what helped me see that we must help. For example, the class we had to do catapults with the children we saw how much they enjoyed working as a team with us.

For me it is very important that there is someone in the library to help and attend to the children. They are more interested in books and sometimes they don’t know what book to get and the people who work in the library helps them. They motivate them to get books that they should check out or books that interest them more. Thanks to the library staff the children know what books to take home and what to work on. My daughter brings up to 3 to 4 books to the house. Or a bunch of books and I ask her why do you want so many books and she replies I’m going to read all of them. I do see that she does make an effort to read them. She might not finish them but she does go through at least half of them because it is time to return them. Regarding technology she already knows more than I do. She knows how to download the program that you carry called Sora. Mr. Winter installed it when I participated in the technology class which I believe was 6 weeks. It was either 5 or 6 weeks, I don’t recall at the moment. I brought my daughter’s tablet and Sora was installed. The students already had it here so we were invited to download the app at home. Now she reads at home on her tablet. She also has another app called Epic where she also downloads books. I don’t know what reading level she has but I have seen all the little stars and I do see how much she likes and enjoys to read.

In the library I see that there are many books but I feel that there needs to be more books. I see some empty spaces where I feel that that books can be and children have more to choose from. They are very helpful in the library but they could use more drawings to make it more cheerful and catch their attention. I see that the space is comfortable but if you could help us out with a little bit more for the students it would be better.

The benefit I have seen having Mr. Winter and Ms. Cabrera is they assist the meetings to receive more money for the library. I have seen the difference with my youngest daughter and how much more she has benefited than my older girls. It is more beautiful, cleaner, tables that are more comfortable for students. I see more books than before but there is still a need for more books. There is technology now where students can download books but there are some students who do not know how and here, they help them get on to the computer or tablet. If they can’t find the book here, they can find it on their tablet. That is to thanks to Mr. Winter and the rest of the staff who works here to help them.
