An Award Winning Children's Book

The Night Diary. By Veera Hiranandani.  Penguin Random House, 2018.  272 pages. $16.99

The Night Diary tells the tale of one girl's journey of being forced to leave the only home she has ever know because it is now Pakistan, and her family is no longer welcomed there.  This historical fiction novel takes place in 1947 during an uncertain time in India's history.  The country is no longer under the control of Britain, creating a political divide between the two major religious groups in India, Muslims and Hindus.  During this shift in power, hundreds of thousands of people must migrate to or from Pakistan based on their religion.  Travel during this time was unsafe and many people were killed while fleeing their homeland.

Nisha is in a unique situation; she is half Muslim and half Hindi.  As a twelve-year-old girl, she struggles with her identity and desires to find her place in a world that she no longer understands.  It is unsafe to stay in her family home, but leaving is also unsafe.  Her father makes the difficult decision to take the family across the India/Pakistan border in hopes of finding a new home where they will be accepted.  Nisha documents her journey in letters written to her mother who passed away when she and her twin brother were born.  These letters become The Night Diary.

The Night Diary is an award-winning book that brings Indian history and culture to life.  Nisha's experiences teach us about family, faith, and loss.  Although this story is written for grades 3-7, it has many qualities that would also appeal to children and adults.  It is a book that would be a great addition to any library.
